Dürr’s 8,000th robot will paint add-ons at Geely in China

Bietigheim-Bissingen, 27 February 2014 – The Chinese well-known car manufacturer Geely Automobile will paint its new C21 car models and the add-ons with material- and resource-saving Dürr technology. A total of 51 robots are to be used in the new Geely Automobile plant, one of these will be the 8.000th robot produced by Dürr.

Geely has increased their grade of automation and is now returning to tried-and-tested Dürr systems and application technology for their bumper painting. A total of 12 painting robots are being used there, among these is this significant robot. Two flame treatment robots activate the plastic surface. This enables better adhesion to the surface. Two robots then apply the primer coat. Four EcoRP L033 fitted with EcoBell2 spray guns are responsible for the primer and clear coat.

The solvent-based paint is applied to the outer surface of the parts during the Bell-Bell process. This procedure foregoes on air atomizers completely; instead the paint is exclusively applied with the EcoBell2 electrostatic high-speed spray guns. This results in an improved transfer efficiency factor of up to 75%, thus reducing carbon emissions and saving on paint.

Four EcoRS 16 sealing-robots, each are armed with the accurate EcoGun Sealing applications nozzle apply VC seam and under body protection on the car body in stop-and-go operations. This reduction of manual application during the sealing processes saves staff costs. The automated process control, particularly the synchronization of the exact dose and movement, also decreases the use of materials. The SERCOS II robot control software supervises the sealing and paint process.

The inner and outer car bodies will be painted by 35 robots in a primer and top coat painting line. Doors and boots will be opened, held and closed by a total of 11 handling robots. The car body is thoroughly cleaned with emu feathers before the painting job in the top coat painting line by the EcoClean F5 cleaning booth.

The paint application of the base and clear coat is taken over the tried-and-tested EcoBell2. The colour change only takes 12 seconds if you use the EcoMCC or EcoLCC colour changers during base lacquer in combination with the new EcoPump9 dose pump. Colour discoloration is noticeably lessened.

All paint and sealing robots are fitted with the robot controller EcoRPC as a standard. Sercos II is the universal language used to steer all drives und process elements. This simplifies maintenance and increases the application performance.

The new paint shop should enter the market in autumn 2014 after a mere 22 weeks of assembly time.
