  • Rotational dip process RoDip by Dürr

Dürr rebuilds PT / ED line at Volkswagen in Spain

Bietigheim-Bissingen, April 10th, 2014 – Dürr Systems Spain S.A has built a complete new line for pretreatment and electro dipping in the Pamplona plant of Volkswagen Navarra S.A. With production starting in November 2013 Volkswagen can rely on a modern and efficient installation based on Dürr’s proven rotational dip coating technology Ecopaint RoDip.

By setting up a new PT/ED line in a new building Volkswagen replaced the oldest installation in the painting process at Pamplona plant. As 50% of the paint quality is already fixed after pretreatment and electro-dipping, Volkswagen Navarra chose to work with Dürr, who has numerous references in PT/ED and in the Spanish market. The robust RoDip M system is the heart of the new installation and brings in several advantages: Due to the complete rotation of the car body in the tank, RoDip requires no entry or exit ramps. This considerably shortens the length of the dip tank. Besides saving space, this reduction in the volume of the tank also reduces material and energy consumption. At the same time, RoDip provides a uniform coating thickness - also at critical points such as the rocker panel - and thus the best possible corrosion protection through the optimized process of immersion, flooding, and draining. The customer was further convinced because of the easy maintenance of the system.

The cleanliness of the bath is supported by an extensive installation of EcoMultiCyclone separators. In a continuous process the EcoMultiCyclones separate solid particles from the bath with the cleaned fluid being led back into the tanks. The benefit is less dirt in the bath and consequently a better coating quality. Additionally, less chemicals are used as the bath life cycle is significantly longer.

Another supportive component of the new PT/ED line is the innovative concept EcoDCMACS for supplying electricity to the electro dipping tank. Its special feature lies in the modular anode control, which creates a voltage profile that moves with the car body. Energy is concentrated to the car body and not wasted in the interval times when no car is passing. This has a positive effect on ernergy consumption as well as the coating quality.

As a systems integrator Dürr has supplied a number of ancillary facilities like the ED oven, the working decks, the external conveyor technology and also the DI-water regeneration plant.

This line is currently painting the Polo model with a net capacity of 67 jobs per hour. The line is prepared for an additional painting of the Touran model in the future and can be extended to a net capacity of 75 cars per hour.
