Press Release

"Dürr Challenge" film competition for students: winning team secures victory through courage and originality

Bietigheim-Bissingen, November 6, 2014 - For the second time, students from all over Germany applied to take part in the "Dürr Challenge" film competition hosted by the mechanical and plant engineering firm. Guided by the motto "Feel the culture – discover the diversity", the 15 finalists created film portraits of the cities of Seoul, Istanbul and New York. They were once again coached by young directors from the Baden-Württemberg film academy. The winning contribution was a short film about New York, which combines originality and exceptional technical skill.

The competition is unique in Germany. "For the Dürr Group it is an important measure to reach students from all fields and to position itself as an attractive employer. The competition reflects the values that define our company: initiative, flexibility and intercultural understanding", explains Paul Eckert, Head of HR Development at Dürr. Last year saw the premiere of the film competition, featuring three exceptional short films. There was a buzz of anticipation among the organizers as they waited to find out what the participants would bring back from their travels this time.

And the short films produced by the three student teams did not fail to impress. On November 5, 2014, around 200 visitors were captivated throughout the premieres of the films screened at the Caligari cinema in Ludwigsburg. Consequently, the judges found it difficult to pick a winner. Among them were Yves Alain Lambert from the Baden-Württemberg film academy as well as four company representatives, including two students.

The different ways in which the young film makers approached the topic made the decision particularly difficult. One film stood out for its thematic concept, the next film for its touching images, and the third film for its technical implementation and clever dramatic composition. The New York team finally emerged as the winner after a thrilling head to head. "We were impressed, above all, by the high technical standard as well as the originality and dramatic composition of this film. The final decision was based on the participants' courage not to get carried away by the diversity of the city but to focus on the detail and make this a central theme", says judge and speaker at the awards ceremony, Helena Frank, who is currently writing her master's thesis at Dürr in the field of mechatronics and is supported by the company as part of the Germany Scholarship.

Delighted with the results of the movies, Klaus Achtelik, Head of Corporate Human Resources, already announced the follow-up to the Dürr Challenge next year.

Pictures of the awards ceremony are available for download at www.durr.com/press/images/. All three films can be watched on www.durr.com/press/movies.
